This course examines the cultural meaning of crime fiction looking at themes such as motivation, obsession, shame, and freedom in crime fiction. Students will examine early examples of the private detective story and critically consider the development of the genre's complexity in contemporary popular work. The course includes study of short story, novel, television, podcast and film.
